In a world increasingly aware of environmental impact, eco-friendly DIY (do-it-yourself) projects are gaining popularity. Not only are they a fun and creative way to spend time, but they also contribute to sustainability and reduce our ecological footprint. Here we present some ideas for eco-friendly DIY projects that you can do from home to take care of the planet while enjoying the process.

1. Reusable Cloth Bags

Necessary materials:

  • Old t-shirts or scraps of fabric

  • Scissors

  • Thread and needle or a sewing machine

Instructions:

  1. Select an old t-shirt: Choose a t-shirt that you no longer wear. Cotton t-shirts are ideal for their durability.

  2. Cut the sleeves and collar: This will form the handles of the bag. Adjust according to the size you want.

  3. Sew the bottom: Turn the shirt inside out and sew the bottom closed.

  4. Reinforce the seams: Go over the seam several times to make sure the bag is strong.

  5. Decorate as you like: You can add patches, paint or dye the fabric to give it a personal touch.

Benefits:

  • Plastic reduction: By using reusable bags, you reduce the demand for single-use plastic bags.

  • Creative recycling: You give new life to old t-shirts, reducing textile waste.

2. Homemade Composting

Necessary materials:

  • Compost container (can be a bucket or wooden box)

  • Organic waste (fruit and vegetable remains, egg shells, coffee grounds)

  • Earth and dry leaves

Instructions:

  1. Choose a place for your composter: It can be in the garden, the balcony or even in the kitchen if you have space.

  2. Add brown and green materials: Alternate layers of green waste (kitchen scraps) with brown materials (dry leaves, inkless cardboard).

  3. Maintain moisture: Sprinkle a little water if the compost is dry, but avoid excess moisture.

  4. Turn the compost: Turn the compost once a week to aerate it and speed up the decomposition process.

  5. Wait and use: In a few months, you will have nutrient-rich compost for your plants.

Benefits:

  • Waste reduction: You transform food scraps into compost instead of throwing them away.

  • Soil improvement: Compost provides essential nutrients and improves soil structure.

3. Ecological Candles

Necessary materials:

  • Soy wax or beeswax

  • cotton wicks

  • Recycled glass jars (jam jars, yogurt)

  • Essential oils (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Melt the wax: Use a double boiler to melt the soy or beeswax.

  2. Prepare the jars: Place the wick in the center of the jar, holding it with a holder or a pencil.

  3. Add essential oils: If desired, add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to the melted wax.

  4. Pour the wax: Carefully pour the wax into the jars, letting the wick remain in the center.

  5. Let cool: Allow the wax to cool and solidify before cutting off the excess wick.

Benefits:

  • Use of natural materials: Soy or beeswax candles are healthier than paraffin candles.

  • Reusing jars: You take advantage of glass jars instead of throwing them away.

4. Vertical Gardening

Necessary materials:

  • Wooden pallets

  • Tarps or garden bags

  • Soil and plants (herbs, flowers, vegetables)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the paddle: Clean and sand the wooden paddle to remove splinters.

  2. Attach the tarp: Staple the tarp or garden bags to the back and sides of the pallet to contain the soil.

  3. Fill with soil: Fill the compartments of the palette with good quality soil.

  4. Plant your vegetables or flowers: Place the plants in the compartments and water well.

  5. Place the palette: You can lean it against a wall or hang it if it is strong enough.

Benefits:

  • Space saving: Ideal for small spaces such as balconies or patios.

  • Own harvest: You can grow your own food, reducing the need for transported products.

Green DIY projects are not only a great way to be creative and productive, but they also promote sustainability and environmental awareness. By reusing materials and reducing waste, we can contribute to a healthier, more sustainable planet. So next time you feel inspired, try one of these projects and make a difference from home!
